A Guide To Famous Jedi and Sith Lightsabers

Lightsabers are the most iconic part of the Star Wars universe. They’re an elegant tool from a more civilised age, or a terrifying tool for destruction when wielded by the Sith. Each lightsaber is unique – a testament to the choices and personalities of those who wield them. Because each is different, it’s no surprise that fans across the globe have their favourite models. Let’s take a look at some of the most beloved lightsabers and those who wielded them.

Lightsaber Qui Gon Jinn

In Episode I, we are introduced to Jedi Master Qui Gon Jinn. His lightsaber, a sleek and futuristic looking model, was constructed from alloy metal and contained a distinctive black contoured handgrip. Qui Gon’s lightsaber was famously used by his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi to defeat Darth Maul.

Lightsaber Anakin Skywalker

Anakin Skywalker has a doomed history, with his fall to the dark side and transformation into Darth Vader all well-known. However, Anakin’s lightsaber is still a much-loved saber that is sought after by collectors. Anakin actually possessed two different sabers before his turn to the dark side. The first was a cylindrical saber that differed from his master’s – an early sign of his recklessness and willpower. He designed the saber himself with a heavy-duty hilt to allow wielding with maximum strength.

However, following the saber’s destruction on Geonosis, Anakin Skywalker built his second and more famous saber. This one was similar to the first, but sported a modified hilt with a more rigid grip and custom activation switch.

Lightsaber Darth Vader

Following his turn to the dark side, Anakin Skywalker was reborn as Darth Vader. His new lightsaber, a vicious red-bladed design, was a dual-phase saber that allowed the blade length to be controlled during combat. Free of the restrictions of the Jedi order and with the might of the empire behind him, Vader was constantly refining and upgrading his saber – although its exterior design resembled a black and steel version of Anakin’s original build.

Lightsaber Kylo Ren

Kylo Ren’s lightsaber is unique amongst the Star Wars franchise – with an unstable crystal and vents creating a cross-guard design. The lightsaber is a design from millennia ago, with the crossguard blades acting as a way to control the unstable energies of the flawed kyber crystal. Its red blade crackles menacingly and is used in all of Kylo’s fights as a dark side practitioner.

Lightsaber Darth Maul

Darth Maul’s double-bladed lightsaber introduced a new era of possibilities to the Star Wars universe. The savage Zabrak fighter brought a whole new era of double-bladed action to the franchise and although his appearance was short, the dual-bladed style has lived on. Darth Maul’s lightsaber, typical of Episode I, is sleek and clean, with a silver metal hilt and red activation buttons. The blade was a bright red, and even after it was cut in half, maul would continue to use it as a single saber in the extended universe.

Lightsaber Yoda

Grand Master Yoda was an incredibly powerful force user, but his stature limited his choice of lightsaber. Yoda’s lightsaber was therefore a short-hilted, short-bladed green saber that was kept relatively simple, in keeping with Yoda’s monk-link attitude. Unfortunately, the lightsaber Yoda had built by hand and battled Count Dooku with was lost following a duel with Darth Sidious.

Lightsaber Obi-Wan

Obi-Wan Kenobi’s lightsaber is iconic – but is in fact the third saber wielded by Obi-Wan throughout the Star Wars franchise. His original saber was lost in the battle with Darth Maul. His second was lost on Geonosis.

His third and final saber, however, was not lost and would instead follow Obi-Wan into his exile where he would keep it and wield it against Darth Vader on board the Death Star. Unfortunately, a duel he would lose. However, Luke Skywalker would use the design as the basis for his own saber – cementing its legacy and making the style so iconic.
